<Warning: There may be spoilers. I have no idea how caught up everyone is with the comic, but I'm not planning on discussing anything about the most recent updates>
I was just reading over some tumblr about headcanons, and while many of them were silly, others were contradictory to the canon and some were just silly, some of them really got me thinking.
Just a few points I'd like to discuss:
I'm beginning to suspect that Bro took in young Dave Strider as his younger brother because he felt that he didn't know how to be a good father. Bro must have been fairly young when he took Dave in, and felt uncomfortable being in the position of "Suddenly a Dad". It's also quite possible that he didn't want others to see him as a young father, which isn't cool, but as a cool older brother looking out for his younger sibling, which is cool.
I'm also beginning to suspect that Bro, while not a /drug/ addict in the illegal sense, was probably addicted to energy drinks/coffee, trying to stay awake all the time. He seems to live a fairly extravagant lifestyle, and pairing that with raising a kid, he would need a lot of money. He probably was up most hours of the day working several jobs and maintaining his websites to make sure Dave had everything he needed. I mean, look at all the stuff in Dave's room. Between his PC, his turntables and where they lived (a penthouse apartment), that has to be expensive. That would also explain why Bro put shitty swords in the fridge. He was sleep deprived; dude's bound to blunder every once in a while. But since he has that cool guy persona, he just plays it off, and Dave totally buys it.
On the flip-side, I don't believe for a second Bro ever abused Dave. Yeah, he was rough with him, but it's pretty clear all the guardians knew about Sburb to some extent. It's pretty clear to me, at least, that he was training Dave. Again, this goes back to not feeling like he could be a good Dad. But he did feel like he had to do something, so he did the best he could. He never did anything that Dave couldn't handle. In fact, part of me wonders if Dave was subconsciously holding himself back, which has been eluded to several times (Terezi mentioning he needs to walk out of Bro's shadow and spread his wings, etc). Consider: we see Bro training a young Dave after their origins are explained. Dave was fast enough as an infant to catch Bro off guard. It doesn't make much sense that Dave would get worse as he got older.
And while I'm talking about Dave: it's pretty obvious Dave idolizes Bro, more than just hero worship. He very clearly wants to be Bro. Between this and his fatalistic viewpoint on the world (which is why Dave can't be the hero), it explains a lot about why Dave was willing to die while fighting Jack Noir. He explains that this was inevitable since he had seen it happen in the future, but he's also encountered several doomed Daves in similar scenarios. He doesn't feel like he has a choice. And that's why he's going to die protecting Rose. Because he feels like he has to die. That it's his destiny. Because he thinks he has to die just like Bro did. And I think part of him wants to. To be the badass one who sacrifices himself for the sake of another.
